The killing and kidnapping of medical doctors have become a weekly affair in Rivers state. The recent victim of this dastardly and heinous act is a 2011 promising young medical graduate of the University Of Nigeria Nsukka, Dr Chidi Odumegwu.
Breaking the news, the Rivers state chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association( NMA ) ,Dr Dennis Datonye Alasia stated as thus:
Dr Chidi Odimegwu who works at Sophike clinic died from gunshot following a robbery yesterday nite 10.30pm on ada George road. He was in company’s of another Dr Tony who works at Springs hospital who ran to hide during the attack and came back to find him in a pool of blood. The Toyota Venza/matrix car was snatched. Dr Tony who was held by the police in ? protective custody has been released. The Drs family has been notified.
Dr Alasia (NMA Chairman Rivers State).
One thing with Nigerians is that no one will ever condemn what doctors in Rivers state are currently passing through but when doctors finally succumb to this withdrawal of services kidnappers, armed robbers, car snatchers are forcing them into, then mouths will wag,the press will demonize the Nigerian medical doctors. This doctor killed, just like his other colleagues,is someone else’s brother, uncle, nephew, fiance, son, cousin ,relative .He did not grow from a tree, somebody discomforted him/herself to see him through in the medical school and now by just a click of the trigger,he is in the morgue awaiting internment. For more than 72 hours of this ugly incident ,no comment from either the state or federal government because to them the association the late doctor belonged to before his untimely death, considers their patients more important than their members. Can courts in the state sit if a judge or any other judicial officer is murdered in cold blood? Won’t the state be shut down if a member of the vibrant Nigeria Labour Congress is murdered like a chicken ? What do we see today? Activities are at their peak at both government and privately owned hospitals, after all late Dr Chidi Odumegwu might not be a financial member of the association. Doctors are living in fear in the state because nobody knows whose turn it will be .
Adieu Late Dr Chidi Odumegwu
We are sorry you practised in a state where any medical doctor that goes out in the morning and comes back alive in the evening ,will specially thank God. I was persuading you to join us at our UNN alumni meetings every first Thursday of the month at our DEN at Marine base Port Harcourt and you promised starting this month of August but you die before that date.
We are sorry you practised in a country where security agents are on top of the situation even when it is obvious that the situation has either overwhelmed them or esoterically buried them very long time ago. If staying on top of the situation means that killing or kidnapping of doctors will be on weekly/monthly basis then it is time they went below the situation to get to the root of the situation .
We are sorry, you practised in a country where it will take the security agents more than 72 hours to bring your killers to book. Did we not hear that your fellow colleague in your company was arrested and later released, while the real culprits are moving about on the street looking for another target. If one wants to suggest to them ,they will ask one ‘if one wants to teach them their jobs’.
