The nature of medical practice in Nigeria is so primitive that the government is directly involved in the day to day management of many of our secondary and tertiary hospitals. In other developed climes, the day to day management of the hospitals is in the hands of individuals or the church .Top ranking hospitals in the USA ,the UK and elsewhere in the world are either privately owned or owned by the missionaries . In those saner climes even if the government will be involved in the day to day management of the hospitals, there must be a strong partnership agreement known as the Public-Private partnership (PPP). The aim of this PPP is to introduce competition into the system and hence bring in efficiency into the management of resources in the healthcare sector of the economy . Today we talk of our medical and health graduates not being employed; the truth is that government cannot create jobs for all her citizens. The right thing to do is for the government to create a business friendly system where the citizens can create jobs not only for themselves but also for other citizens in order to increase the Gross Domestic Product(GDP) for the country.
Disturbed by the incessant medical tourism by Nigerians outside the shores of this country, the Bank of Industry(BOI) has deemed it necessary to empower private hospitals as it is the case anywhere in the world so that our private hospitals can be on a par with their counterparts worldwide . Just to mention but a few, the great Apollo Hospital in India, the Popular Johns Hopkins Hospital Boston, USA ,our own Eko Hospital Lagos and many others are not owned by the government. Although the hospitals Mr President or his Son recently traveled for their medical attention were shrouded in secrecy ,the truth remains that the hospitals can never be government owned hospitals as efficiency of services are better harnessed when private investors are empowered to fully management their establishments rather when the government managing the establishments . A comparison between our former NITEL and present day GSM operators will show us the need for the government to leave the management of some establishments to private firms or even to empower private firms for greater productivity .
Breaking the news , the National NMA secretary , Dr Yusuf Tanko Sununu revealed as follows:
Dear all, This is to inform all our members that following a Breakfast meeting with management of Bank Of Industries(BOI) and the Leadership of NMA, MDCAN and NDA at the Abuja head office, there exist both Dangote and BOI funds domicile with the bank that can be accessed at 5 – 10 per cent interest rate. For loan of less than 10 million Naira you only need 2 guarantors without physical collateral. While for loans of more than 10 million Naira, will require a collateral. The loan is meant for purchase and installation of equipment but not for infrastructure. Payment to the supplier will be effected within 2 weeks of installation and test running of the equipment. There is a moratorium period of 6 months to a year before commencement of payment. Application forms and Guidelines on how to apply will be made available soon.It is our hope that members can utilize this golden opportunity to upgrade their practice. ‘
