On Friday, the 26th day of January 2018 an ultra modern specialist hospital was commissioned in Port Harcourt, Rivers state as part of the activities lined up for the pastoral visit by the General Overseer (G.O.) of the Redeemed Christian Church of God( RCCG). Earlier in the day, the secretary of the Region 5 Health Workers Forum, Dr Paul John, and other members of the Health Forum had gone to the venue of the newly built hospital, located within the Redeem camp in Aluu community,to inspect all the facilities and to prepare the venue for the reception of this revered servant of God. At exact 1710 hours on that fateful day, this man of God and his entourage arrived at the venue. Immediately he alighted from his car, he went straight to commission the hospital as he was occupied with so many pastoral works that day.
He was taken round the wards, offices and other places in the hospice by Pastor (Dr) Essien, a retired Neuropsychiatrist whose son designed the architectural piece of the hospital. The hospital was modeled on the elite hospitals in London and America. The hospital is a Rehabilitation center where mental health patients and patients with drug related health challenges will be rehabilitated. It was built with the state-of –the art facility. Inspecting the inside of the hospital, Matron P.G.N. Harry , the head of Nursing unit for the regional health forum confided in Dr Paul John that the brains behind the architectural piece were superlative . Everything installed there is world class. Even the likely future challenge to be encountered in the hospice was taken into consideration by the builders. The commissioning of the hospital is one of the ways the Church is assisting the society. One of the visions of the hospital is that residential doctors in Psychiatry or Mental health specialty from different tertiary hospitals will be doing some of their elective clinical postings there.
Meanwhile, Pastor E.A. Adeboye arrived Port Harcourt from Eket,Akwa Ibom state on Monday 22nd January. On Tuesday he was at Ogoni Land for a state-wide crusade. He was occupied with other pastoral activities between Wednesday and Thursday and on Friday people started trooping in to the Redeem camp located at Aluu community near Rukpokwu and Igwurita communities in Rivers state and it was the same Friday that this hospital was commissioned .Saturday was Ministers’ and Workers’ conference which ended by 2pm in preparation for the Mega praise to be held at the Adokiye Amesiemaka Stadium on Sunday, 28th January 2018. The stadium event ended at 1205 hours and those who wanted to participate in a day-out with Daddy G.O. moved down to the Redeem camp to have a one-on-one interaction with this servant of God. Meanwhile, all the programmes were streamlined live by the church owned digital television station, The Dove TV.

Before building and commissioning of this specialist hospital, the church at the regional level had been offering free treatment to Nigerians, irrespective of the religious creed and belief, via the church owned El-Gibbor Health Centre , located inside the Redeem camp in Aluu community. At this juncture, the secretary of the regional health forum deems it necessary to prepare a short report of the activities of this Health Forum from inauguration till date:
SHORT REPORT BY THE RCCG REGION 5 HEALTH WORKERS’ FORUM
This is the report prepared by the secretary of the forum, Dr Paul John (www.drpauljohn.com).
Our Health Forum was properly constituted in the second quarter of 2017. Our first meeting was at the Region 5 parish near Marine base Port Harcourt, Rivers state. Our subsequent meetings were held at Dayspring Parish, along Liberation Stadium road, Port Harcourt until we finally narrowed down to Shepherd’s Hill Parish, Rivers province 8 headquarters , along NTA road Port Harcourt because of the centrality and easy accessibility of the venue to all members of our great forum .We have held series of meetings since inception and later on we created another sub-forum for the Regional heads of all our health units and the heads of all our health forums at the provincial levels. Our Whatsapp social media platform for the Regional heads of our different health units/departments currently has 19 active members while our RCCG Region 5 Health Workers’ Forum (general) Whatsapp platform currently has about 100 active members and more members are still joining on daily basis.
We in the health forum superintend all activities in our Regional Camp clinic and any other medical outreaches to be hosted by the church be it at the area, zonal , provincial or regional level(s). We advise the church on all matters and activities relating to health. In view of this, we had our first ever meeting with the Pastor-in-charge of Region 5, Pastor Belemina Obunge , in third quarter of 2017 where we deliberated on all challenges we were encountering as a forum .Our daddy addressed them one after the other.
Pastor B. Obunge approved huge sum of money for the monthly purchase of drugs and other hospital consumables for our Camp clinic. I must confess that this is first of its kind where the church offsets all the medical bills of patients, with the patients so treated contributing nothing. Even mission hospitals abroad have not achieved this feat.
It may interest my reader to know that it is also the region that pays the monthly salaries of all the health workers at our Camp clinic. We must thank God for the good work He is using his servant, Pastor B. Obunge to be doing in our Region, as it concerns taking care of the needy and the sick who could not afford the hospital bills on their own. This feat recorded by the church contrary to what is seen in other religious gatherings where schools and hospitals are built with church money but the members who contributed this money though tithes and offerings et cetera cannot train their children in the schools or even get treated in the church hospital.
After inaugurating our health forum, our first task was to make our camp clinic functional and operational. We immediately hosted our first ever medical outreach where we treated not less than 1000 patients. Thereafter, the camp clinic, popularly called El-Gibbor clinic, became functional. We currently run outpatient services on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and turnout of patients has been very overwhelming and awesome. Although we are making substantial progress, we still need enablers because we cannot leave the total finance of this laudable project to the church alone. This is important because our Multi-million naira Rehabilitation centre has just been commissioned by our General Overseer, Pastor E.O. Adeboye and the center is expected to be operational. That will increase the financial burden to the Region. It has to be noted that RCCG region 5 comprises Rivers and Bayelsa states .
Meanwhile, the principal officers of our Region 5 Health forum are as follows:
The co-ordinator is Pastor (Dr) Deinma A.Dikibo, who is also the Rivers province 8 provincial pastor.
He is assisted by Pastor (Prof) O. Obunge.
The Secretary and Whatsapp social media administrator for the forum is Dr Paul John

Also in order to objectively assess the quality of services being rendered in our health facilities, in our different provinces, in the Region and to make our professional recommendations, we further created a Medical taskforce, populated by two seasoned medical doctors and two experienced nurses.
The taskforce medical unit is headed by Pastor (Prof) O. Obunge assisted by Dr Paul John whereas the taskforce Nursing unit is headed by matron P.G.N. Harry, assisted by Nurse Wichendu Madonna C.
Meanwhile, The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is a Pentecostal megachurch and denomination founded in Lagos, Nigeria. The General overseer (most senior pastor) is Enoch Adeboye, ordained in 1981. As of March, 2017, RCCG had a presence in 196 countries of the world. The church in Lagos has an average church attendance of 50,000. RCCG was founded in 1952 by Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi (1909–1980) after he had been involved in a number of other churches.
Rev. Akindayomi chose Enoch Adeboye as the next General overseer. Enoch Adeboye was a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, as at the time he joined the church in 1973. Adeboye initially became one of the interpreters translating Akindayomi’s sermons from Yoruba to English. He was ordained a pastor of the church in 1975, and his appointment as leader(General overseer) of the church was formalized by the posthumous reading of Akindayomi’s sealed pronouncement. In 1990, Redeemed Christian Church of God Bible School is founded.
Andrew Rice, writing in The New York Times, calls the RCCG “one of [Africa’s] most vigorously expansionary religious movements, a homegrown Pentecostal denomination that is crusading to become a global faith”. The church’s leaders preach that in the future “In every household there will be at least one member of Redeemed Christian Church of God in the whole world.”
In 2016, the weekly worship attendance of the church in Lagos averaged 50,000. In Rivers state, province 10 headquarters is located at City of Joy parish Rumuagholu , Port Harcourt, very close to the popular Rumuokoro junction ,Port Harcourt and the provincial pastor is Pastor Solomon Marega. The province is under RCCG Region 5 which comprises provinces in Rivers and Bayelsa states and the pastor-in-charge of the Region is Pastor Obunge .
